“The city looks best from the water, and better still with the sun going down behind you.” Cindy says it with the certainty of a sailor, which is exactly what she is.
Give her a small boat on the IJ at dusk and she returns with two things: a wind-flushed grin and a camera roll full of rooftops turning gold. Photography is her quiet obsession. After dark she trades sunsets for the old quarter, where the red and violet signs along the Oudezijds Achterburgwal double themselves in the canal, and she will show you how a single puddle on the cobbles can hold an entire street upside down. Neon, she says, is simply sunset for night owls.
Cheerful comes first in any description of her, sporty a close second. At 26 she is slim and 168 cm tall, with long wavy blonde hair and blue eyes as clear as a spring sky over the harbour, and she brings a sunny poolside charm into even the most formal suite. Most days start on a yoga mat, which explains the easy posture and the unhurried breathing when a city night turns hectic. Sailing, meanwhile, taught her patience with the weather and an excellent sense of timing.
Conversation drifts from sailing knots to shutter speeds to the best spot in town for a sunrise stretch, and nothing about her is fussy. Plans may change three times; her good mood does not change once. She is the rare companion who treats a delayed dinner as a bonus hour rather than a problem.
Cindy calls De Pijp home, a quarter of market stalls and crowded terraces a short ride from the hotels on the Amstel, and from there the old canals are an easy trip north; she knows which bridges give the finest reflections. Michelle knows the same winds on the water, and Luna brings a second pair of trained eyes to any talk about photographs.
